Since 1976, Judy Howard has owned and operated Buckboard Antique Quilts in Oklahoma City. Julia Roberts, America’s sweetheart, likes to give Wedding Ring quilts when her family and friends marry. Jessica Lange and Dustin Hoffman are also celebrity clients, Dustin purchasing seventeen quilts while he was in town filming Rainman. Judy recently moved her shop home to concentrate on her web business. Her mail order business offers photos of 200 antique quilts. Editor Rhonda Richards recently honored Judy by featuring Buckboard Quilts in their book Great American Quilts 2004. Many of Judy’s articles and quilts are showcased in quilt magazines and books. After graduating in 1966 with honors from Oklahoma Baptist University and doing graduate work at Oklahoma State University, Judy and her husband Bill purchased and operated Howard Equipment Company for ten years. Then, quilts won her heart! Heavenly Patchwork I and II and Centennial Stitches—Oklahoma History in Quilts were awarded the Golden Seal as official Oklahoma Centennial Book Projects. Both Heavenly Patchwork I and II received Best Non Fiction Book. Two of the stories appear in Chicken Soup books. The Oklahoma City Downtown Library placed Judy’s books in its Oklahoma Room. Judy now presents “Under the Covers with Granny Reveals Our Oklahoma Secrets” quilt trunk show programs with story telling, which includes 50 quilts dating back to 1837. Other programs include a children’s “Tell Me a Story of Oklahoma,” Thanking Our Troops—Stories of Our Unsung Heroes,” “Preserving Our Family Heritage” writing workshops, “Writing Your Memoirs Workshop,” “Block Buster Book Sales on a Shoe-String,” “Quilted Love Letter for America--Thanking Our Troops,” Jane Phillips, Carrie Nation and Kate Barnard in costume Educational titled “You too Can Change the World,” “New Beginnings: Pursuing and Achieving the Impossible Dream,” “Self-publishing for Dummies,” “Be Your Own Publicist and Save $10,000/month.”
All book and rental profits go to non-profit groups that provide quilts for wounded soldiers and the families of the fallen—all those most in need of the touch of God’s love and comfort that quilts represent. |
