Storytelling Class

Spirit of Oklahoma 2010 Storytelling Festival

Enjoy the great art of stories and storytelling and also learn from storyteller, Jeanette Harjo, in her Storytelling 101 class offered at our festival this year.

This class will be offered through Seminole State College, in conjunction with OU, for one hour of college credit. More information about the class and how to sign up for it will be posted here as the information becomes available. You can also contact Jeanette for more information.

Catalog Description

Storytelling 101 addresses the history, principles, and techniques for collecting, organizing, and sharing stories. Students will attend the “Spirit of Oklahoma Storytelling Festival.

Rationale

This course will increase awareness and provide a better understanding of the importance to preserve and perpetuate the art of storytelling.

General Education Objectives:

Students are expected to achieve the following outcomes.

  • 1: Demonstrate basic storytelling skills.
  • 2: Demonstrate an understanding of gathering information for a story.
  • 3: Demonstrate an understanding of storytelling’s role in society.
  • 4: Demonstrate an understanding of how storytelling can be used in classrooms to meet state and national educational standards.

Course Outcomes:

Students in this course are expected to achieve the following:

  • 1. To increase their understanding of the importance of storytelling in educational, family, community, and professional settings.
  • 2. To improve skills necessary to identify good resources, collect, organize, evaluate, and present stories.
  • 3. Students will develop evaluative listening skills though class lecture, attendance of the Spirit of Oklahoma Storytelling Festival, and class storytelling exercises.
